State e-car subsidies to come in 2025 – First plans of the future government
BYD plans to launch the BYD Dolphin Surf (still known as BYD Seagull in China) this year at a competitive price of less than €25,000 in Europe. All information and pictures.
The Chinese carmaker BYD is further expanding its European model range. With the planned BYD Dolphin Surf (still BYD Seagull in China), the small car segment is to be tackled.

Commenting on the new Dolphin Surf, BYD's Vice President Stella Li said: "We are confident that the Dolphin Surf, with its blend of original design, practical utility, city-ready dimensions, lively performance and superior engineering, will appeal to customers who want a vehicle that is easy to move around the city but does not compromise on equipment. We know that the Dolphin Surf is ready for Europe, and we believe that Europe is ready for the Dolphin Surf."
BYD Dolphin Surf – Small electric car with a solid range for the city
In terms of dimensions, the Dolphin Surf fits into the A-segment and accordingly competes with the Citroen e-C3 or the Fiat Grande Pande. The new BYD will be the smallest in the model range with a length of 3,780 mm, a width of 1,715 mm and a height of 1,540 mm. The wheelbase is 2,500 mm. As a small city runabout, the BYD Dolphin Surf is one of BYD's absolute bestsellers in China under the name Seagull.
In terms of performance, the BYD Dolphin Surf is clearly geared towards city traffic. In Germany, there will be two power levels to choose from: 65 kW (88 hp) or 115 (156 hp) kW. There will also be two variants for the battery: 30 or 43.2 kWh. The range of the Dolphin Surf is thus just under 322 km according to WLTP.
The range in charging power ranges from 65 kW for the small battery to 85 kW for the larger battery. This allows the charging process from 10 to 80% within 30 minutes. With an 11 kW charger for the home, the charging process from 0 to 100% takes three and a half and five hours respectively. The Dolphin Surf also comes with a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function as standard, which allows the battery in the car to supply electrical devices with power. Up to 3.3 kW can operate an electric grill, a coffee machine or other devices during a trip.
The design of the small electric car is dynamic, which is further enhanced by the black design elements on the body. The roof spoiler also refreshes the design of the BYD Dolphin Surf. The Dolphin Surf is delivered with 15 or 16 inch wheels as standard. In terms of paintwork, the Dolphin Surf is also intended to refresh the streetscape and therefore offers 4 colors: Lemon Green, Polar Night Black, Apricity White and Ice Blue. As standard, the Dolphin Surf is delivered in bright lemon green.
BYD Dolphin Surf – Spacious city runabout with a surprising amount of space and equipment
Trotz seiner kompakten Dimensionen ist der BYD Dolphin Surf ein überraschend geräumiger Begleiter im Stadtalltag. Dafür sorgt der Radstand von 2.500 mm und ein gutes Raumkonzept mit 308 Litern Kofferraum, der sich bei Bedarf auf 1.037 Liter erweitern lässt. Vorne grüßt der familiäre 10,1 Zoll große BYD-Bildschirm, der sich drehen lässt, und eine kleinere Anzeige für die digitalen Instrumente.
Unter dem Touchscreen findet sich auch eine Leiste mit Reglern, sodass nicht alle Funktionen über die Touchbedienung laufen. Ein Sprachsteuerung soll ebenfalls die Bedienung vereinfachen. Sicherheitsassistenten sind ebenfalls zahlreich verbaut und reichen vom Tempomat über einen Spurhalteassistenten auch zu Notbrems- und Fernlichtsystemen. Kabellose Integration des Handys über Apple CarPlay und Android Auto sind ebenfalls an Bord.
There will be a total of three equipment lines for the Dolphin Surf: Active, Boost and Comfort. Even in the entry-level variant, there is V2L, adaptive cruise control, air conditioning and other functions. From the Boost level, there are also electrically adjustable front seats, rain sensor and the option of a larger battery. For the top-of-the-range Comfort variant, there will also be LED headlights, a 360-degree camera, heated seats and the more powerful 115 kW engine (156 hp).
BYD Dolphin Surf – Sales launch and price
The BYD Dolphin Surf is available to order now and the first vehicles are expected to arrive at customers and dealerships in June.
The Dolphin Surf is priced at 69,800 yuan in China, which would be the equivalent of just under 10,000 euros. The BYD Dolphin Surf is not offered at such a low price in Germany, but competitive prices are still planned. Until 30.06.2025 there are special prices for the BYD Dolphin Surf, so you can get the city runabout for less than €20,000.
The entry-level Active model is available from €19,990 until the end of June, the Boost is available from €22,490 and the Comfort is available from €24,990. After the end of the promotion, the following higher list prices will apply:
